10 Reasons Why Huskies Are Unique

Are you thinking of adopting a Husky or are you understandably curious about this remarkable breed? If so, consider the following 10 reasons that make Huskies so unique.

1. Huskies have the most striking and mesmerizing eyes. They can have blue, brown and bi-color eyes (one blue, one brown, known as heterochromia), making them one of the few breeds with such diversity. Not only that, but the intensity of their gaze gives them a mysterious, almost wolf-like appearance.

2. Huskies are notorious for their Houdini-like escape skills. Agile and athletic, they’re more than capable of jumping over fences, digging under gates, and finding the most creative ways of freeing themselves from any and all enclosed spaces.

3. Huskies, unlike many dog breeds that bark, LOVE to howl, “talk,” and even sing! As one of the most vocal breeds, they enjoy engaging in lengthy conversations with their people and howling to express their emotions, making them extremely entertaining companions.

4. Huskies have a thick, luxurious double coat that serves two purposes: it keeps them warm in colder climates and helps regulate their body temperature in warmer climates. And since their coats shed heavily, particularly when the seasons change, grooming them regularly is a must.

5. Huskies, originally bred as sled dogs, are extremely energetic. They require a regular regime of both physical and mental stimulation to stay happy and well behaved. Their enviable energy makes them ideal partners for active people who love running, hiking and adventuring.

6. Huskies are famous for being one of the friendliest breeds around. Their absolute passion for people (this includes strangers, discounting them as guard dogs!), coupled with their playful and affectionate nature, make them perfect as family pets.

7. Huskies, with their deep-rooted pack mentality, are supremely sociable dogs. They paws-itively thrive in those environments where companionship abounds -- whether it’s from people or other dogs – and where they’re never alone for too long.

8. Huskies may be highly intelligent, but they can also be surprisingly mischievous and frustratingly stubborn. Fond of assuming the role of playful pranksters and famous for testing boundaries, they can, however, learn commands and proper behaviors with consistent and patient training.

9. Huskies have a high prey drive because of their strong hunting instincts, leading them to chase smaller animals such as cats, squirrels and/or birds. To keep this behavior in check, it’s essential to socialize them early and keep them on a leash whenever you’re out together in open areas.

10. Huskies, unlike many other breeds, are extremely clean, have little to no doggy odor, and groom themselves much the way cats do. Rarely requiring baths unless they’ve gotten into something especially messy, they’re relatively low-maintenance where cleanliness is concerned.
